What Are 3103 Aluminum Sheet Properties

Apr 07 26

3103 aluminum sheet belongs to the 3000 series aluminum-manganese rust-resistant aluminum alloy. It is a non-heat-treatable wrought aluminum alloy. With its excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and moderate strength, it has become a common aluminum material in construction, HVAC, home appliances, transportation, and other fields.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of 3103 aluminum sheet strictly adheres to national, American, and European standards. The core element ratios are precise, and impurity content is controllable. Specific components (mass fraction) are as follows:

Aluminum (Al): Balance, matrix element, ensuring the basic properties of aluminum.

Manganese (Mn): 0.8%~1.5%, core alloying element, improving strength, refining grains, and enhancing corrosion resistance.

Magnesium (Mg): 0.05%~0.5%, auxiliary strengthening, improving formability and weldability.

Silicon (Si): ≤0.6%, controlling impurity content to avoid affecting plasticity.

Iron (Fe): ≤1.2%, natural impurity, within a reasonable range.

Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Chromium (Cr), Titanium (Ti): ≤0.05%~0.3%, trace additions, optimizing grain size and processability.

This aluminum-manganese-magnesium ternary ratio retains the lightweight and corrosion resistance of pure aluminum while achieving strength upgrades through manganese, making it key to its balanced overall performance.

Chemical Properties

As a rust-resistant aluminum, 3103 aluminum sheet boasts stable chemical properties, with its core advantage lying in its corrosion resistance:

Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance: In urban and rural atmospheric environments, a dense oxide film quickly forms on the surface, resisting oxidation and acid rain erosion, preventing rust and powdering with long-term use;

Media Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to fresh water, neutral salt solutions, and some organic solvents, suitable for humid and mildly corrosive environments;

No Stress Corrosion Cracking Tendency: Contains no elements that easily induce stress corrosion, eliminating the risk of cracking after welding and cold working, exhibiting strong structural stability;

Surface Treatment Compatibility: Easily subjected to anodizing, spraying, and wire drawing treatments, enhancing both decorative and protective properties.

Note: It is not recommended for use in highly corrosive environments such as strong acids, strong alkalis, and high-concentration salt water. For such applications, 5000 series aluminum-magnesium alloys should be selected.

Physical Properties

3103 aluminum alloy retains the lightweight, thermally conductive, and easily machinable physical properties of aluminum alloys. Key parameters are as follows:

Density: 2.70 g/cm³, lightweight and high-strength, effectively reducing component weight;

Melting point range: 645℃~660℃, good hot working performance;

Thermal conductivity: 120~150 W/(m·K), excellent thermal conductivity, suitable for heat dissipation components;

Coefficient of linear expansion: 23.5×10⁻⁶/K, stable thermal expansion and contraction characteristics, suitable for environments with temperature variations;

Electrical conductivity: 30%~40% IACS, moderate conductivity, meeting non-strong conductivity requirements.
