What is 6016 aluminum for

6016 aluminum sheet is a 6xxx series (Al-Mg-Si-Cu series) heat-treatable and wrought aluminum alloy sheet developed by Alcoa. It uses aluminum as the base material, with added magnesium, silicon, and small amounts of copper. It features moderate strength, excellent stamping formability, significant paint hardening effect, good corrosion resistance, and weldability.

Its yield strength in the T4P state is approximately 100-110 MPa, which can be increased to 180-200 MPa after automotive painting. This meets the complex curved surface forming and strength requirements of automotive body panels, and it is mainly used for automotive hoods, doors, trunk lids, and other components.

1. It belongs to the Al-Mg-Si heat-treatable alloy family, contains no copper, exhibits excellent weldability, and eliminates the risk of stress corrosion cracking.

2. Its strength is significantly enhanced after heat treatment, with tensile strength reaching 260~320MPa and yield strength stable at 220~280MPa.

3. It has excellent formability, with no cracking during deep drawing, deep drawing, and bending, suitable for precision forming of complex-shaped aluminum products.

4. It has high surface finish, strong adhesion of anodizing, spraying, and electrophoresis surface treatments, resulting in a uniform and consistent appearance.

2. Grade/Condition: The contract must specify "6016-T4/T4P (automotive grade)," clearly defining alloy composition tolerances. Purchasing T6 condition is strictly prohibited (poor formability).

3. Required documents: Material certificate, certificate of origin, and declaration of compliance (meeting target market automotive standards).

Quality control

1. Mechanical properties: T4 condition tensile strength 180-220MPa, elongation ≥28%; after painting, it must reach T6 equivalent strength, with random sampling and re-inspection upon arrival.

2. Surface and sheet shape: Automotive outer panels must be free of scratches and oxidation, Ra≤0.8μm; thickness tolerance ≤±0.05mm (outer panels), flatness ≤2mm/m.

3. Process compatibility: Cupping value ≥ 9.0 mm (to ensure stamping performance), welded joint strength ≥ 90% of the base material (for structural components).
