5059 Aluminum Sheet for Shipbuilding Tanker Truck

5059 Aluminum

5059 aluminum plate is an improved alloy developed based on the traditional 5000 series (aluminum-magnesium) alloys to meet the requirements of higher strength and corrosion resistance.

By optimizing the ratio of elements such as magnesium and manganese and strictly controlling impurities, it retains the excellent resistance to marine atmospheric corrosion of established alloys such as aluminum 5083, while significantly improving tensile strength (usually reaching over 300MPa), and also has good weldability and processability.

This material is mainly used in fields with dual stringent requirements for material strength and salt spray corrosion resistance, such as marine engineering structural components, ship decks, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier storage tanks, and high-end tanker truck.

The softest material with the best plasticity, suitable for deep drawing and complex forming processes.

H111

290 - 345

≥ 140

≥ 16

Between annealing and work hardening, it possesses certain strength and good formability, often used in sheet metal where work hardening is not strictly controlled.

H116

≥ 16

Commonly used in marine engineering. After special tensile and stabilization treatments, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and low susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

H321

≥ 310

≥ 215

≥ 12

Commonly used in aerospace. It undergoes solution heat treatment, cold working, and stabilization annealing.

It possesses excellent low-temperature toughness and resistance to exfoliation corrosion.

Features

Higher strength: Stronger than ordinary 5083 alloy, belonging to the high-strength aluminum-magnesium alloy category.

Strong corrosion resistance: Excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and stress corrosion, suitable for harsh environments.

Low-temperature resistance: It maintains good toughness at ultra-low temperatures (e.g., -196°C) without becoming brittle.

Good weldability: Easy to weld, with high-strength weld joints and no decrease in corrosion resistance.

Easy to machining: Excellent plasticity, suitable for various cold forming and bending processes.

Impact resistance: Good energy absorption, possessing excellent bulletproof and impact resistance.

Non-magnetic: The material is non-magnetic and possesses good thermal and electrical conductivity.

Applications

Marine engineering: Corrosion-resistant structural components for high-speed boats, patrol boats, and offshore drilling platforms.

Cryogenic storage tanks: LNG carriers and cryogenic storage tanks for liquid oxygen/liquid nitrogen (non-brittle at -196°C).

Military armor: Military vehicles, bulletproof shields, and individual soldier protective equipment (impact-resistant and energy-absorbing).

Aerospace: Military aircraft skins, wings, and fuel tanks (primarily in H321 condition).

Rail transportation: Lightweight outer shells for high-speed train bodies and subway cars.

Chemical equipment: Corrosion-resistant chemical pressure vessels and heat exchangers.

5059 Aluminum Sheet for Shipbuilding Tanker Truck FAQ’s

5059 aluminum sheet is generally considered “marine grade” because it’s a 5xxx-series (AlMg) alloy with high resistance to seawater/saltwater corrosion and good weldability, which are key requirements for marine structures. But if you like to buy it for shipbuilding, pay attention to if it has classification society certification.

For welding 5059 (AlMg) sheet/plate, the most commonly used filler wires are ER5183 and ER5356. The best choice depends on whether you prioritize as-welded strength or general-purpose availability/crack resistance. If you want higher as-welded tensile strength, choose 5183 filler wire; if you are for general fabrication, choose er 5356.

5059 aluminum sheet can be bent without cracking, but bendability depends strongly on temper, thickness, and bend radius/direction. Softer tempers (e.g., O/annealed) bend easily. Work-hardened tempers (H32, H34, H116, H321, etc.) are stronger but less formable, so they need a larger inside bend radius.

5059O (annealed): best overall for tight bends, deep forming, and minimizing edge cracking. If you need some strength but still good formability: 5059H111 (or other lightly strain-hardened tempers, when available) is often a good compromise. 5059H116 / 5059H321: commonly used when you want high strength plus good resistance to exfoliation/corrosion in marine environments (similar intent to 5083H116/H321). H321 is generally a stabilized/controlled processing temper that tends to be used where you want strength with good service stability. H116 is widely specified for marine plate/sheet for corrosion performance.
