A Polished Aluminum Sheet 4x8 is commonly supplied as a 1,219 × 2,438 mm panel, although actual tolerances, finish quality, and film protection must be defined before an order is released. The most frequent project failure is not base-metal strength. It is surface damage, inconsistent reflectivity, waviness, or an unsuitable alloy-temper combination after cutting and forming.

Polished aluminum can describe mechanically polished, bright-rolled, chemically brightened, anodized mirror, or laminated mirror surfaces. These finishes are not interchangeable. A purchase description that says only "polished" leaves too much room for variation.

Define the Material, Finish, and Panel Condition

Start with the end use. Decorative cladding, reflectors, signs, appliances, and fabrication panels require different surface and mechanical controls.

For highly reflective applications, high-purity aluminum is generally preferred because alloying additions can reduce brightness and affect anodized appearance. A 1000 Series product is therefore commonly selected for decorative and reflector-facing surfaces. Where a specific commercial grade is required, 1100 Aluminum Alloy Sheet offers good corrosion resistance and workability, but its surface finish still needs separate acceptance criteria.

Use ASTM B209 for dimensional requirements and general requirements for aluminum and aluminum-alloy plate and sheet. In European projects, EN 485-1, EN 485-2, EN 485-3, and EN 485-4 are relevant references for technical delivery conditions, mechanical properties, tolerances, and special tolerances. These standards do not automatically define "mirror finish." Surface acceptance must be written into the order.

Include these line items:

  • Alloy and temper, for example 1050-H14 or 1100-H14.

  • Nominal thickness and permitted thickness range.

  • Finished size: 1,219 × 2,438 mm, plus length, width, squareness, and diagonal tolerances.

  • One-side or two-side polished finish.

  • Finish type: mechanical polish, bright-roll, anodized mirror, or laminated mirror.

  • Protective film type, thickness, adhesion level, and removal window.

  • Permitted defects on the visible face: scratches, pits, roll marks, oil stains, dents, and edge damage.

  • Packaging orientation and dry-storage requirements.

Control Reflectivity, Flatness, and Fabrication Risk

Reflectivity must be measured rather than described as "high." ASTM E903 covers solar absorptance, reflectance, and transmittance of materials using integrating spheres. For visible-light appearance, ISO 2813 is widely used for gloss measurement at specified geometries, but gloss units are not the same as optical reflectance. A panel can show high gloss while producing distorted reflections because of waviness.

Ask the producer to identify the instrument, angle or wavelength range, calibration practice, sample orientation, and whether the reported value is total reflectance or specular reflectance. Compare results only when the same method is used.

Flatness is equally important for large 4 × 8 panels. A polished face makes oil-canning, coil set, and local buckling more visible than a mill finish. ASTM B209 lists dimensional tolerances, but architectural appearance may demand tighter project-specific limits. Inspect each lot under consistent diffuse lighting and at an agreed viewing distance. For mirror panels, add a reflected-grid inspection because it exposes waviness that is difficult to quantify with gloss alone.

Use this receiving inspection checklist:

  1. Confirm alloy, temper, thickness, and dimensions against the mill test certificate.

  2. Measure thickness at multiple positions away from edges using a calibrated micrometer.

  3. Check diagonal difference and edge squareness on a flat inspection table.

  4. Inspect the protected face before removing film; record dents, trapped particles, wrinkles, and film bubbles.

  5. Remove film from one agreed sample panel after conditioning it to the inspection temperature.

  6. Assess scratches and roll marks under defined lighting, not direct sunlight alone.

  7. Conduct a trial cut, bend, and forming operation when fabrication is planned.

Protective film deserves special attention. Low-tack film can lift during cutting or transport. High-tack film can leave adhesive residue, especially after heat exposure or long storage. State the maximum storage duration, storage temperature, and whether laser cutting, CNC routing, bending, or stamping will occur with film in place. Avoid using solvent cleaners unless they are verified not to attack the film adhesive or polished surface.

Compare Costs by Usable Yield, Not Panel Price

A polished panel costs more than mill-finish material because finishing, inspection, interleaving, film lamination, and damage-control packaging are added. Market aluminum value also changes with regional premiums, conversion charges, energy costs, and London Metal Exchange reference pricing. A fixed price ranking is not reliable across dates or regions.

Request quotations with the same commercial basis: alloy, temper, thickness, finish type, film, quantity, Incoterms, packaging, certificates, and delivery location. Then compare usable yield. A lower-priced panel that arrives with scratches, poor flatness, or difficult-to-remove film can create higher fabrication loss.

For a first production run, approve one representative panel or a small pre-production sample before releasing the full quantity. Preserve the approved sample with its inspection record. It becomes the reference for finish, color tone, reflected-image quality, film behavior, and allowable defects.

A complete order description turns a visually subjective material into a controllable product: specify the standard for dimensions and chemistry, define the polished finish with measurable inspection conditions, and protect the visible surface through fabrication and delivery.
